Barb or I have not taken a vacation in almost 2 years. Well, on October 18th, we are going to shut down NMP for a few days and take a long weekend. We will be gone until the 21st of October.
We have used our website to let our customers know about this. We won't be totally out of touch as we will have a laptop with us, but it will only be for checking email once and a while, and maybe updating a few websites here and there.
The reason that I'm saying all of this is I want to point out that I not only tell my customers to keep their website changing, I practice what I preach. Every month there is some new advice on how to keep your website up in the top of the search engines. A lot of potential clients have heard me say this in the past, and I don't know if they don't comprehend this, or if they feel like that is too much work. The fact is, if you are an expert in your field, chances are you have a wealth of information and knowlege to share with people, all you have to do is put it down on paper (or in an email) and send it.
When you are doing this, you need to think like your customer does, or like someone that doesn't know anything about what you do. I always tell my customers, "pretend that I'm a 5 year old, and explain it to me so that a 5 year old will understand it." If you accomplish this, then EVERYONE will not only understand what you are explaining, but I'm sure there is a lot more that you can explain and drag it out over weeks. It won't take long at all and you can have 12 different articles that share your knowlege about something that you do.
Now what do I do? I program that into your site so that at a specific time, that article will show up on your site. Sure, we can do this manually, but it's like that infomercial, "set it, and forget it"
If I program things to appear at certain times on your website (or if your web developer does this) take advantage of it. It will not only make the web developers life easier, it will make your life easier too.
Your website will be changing even if you forget about it, and that will allow you to go back to doing what you do best, which is probably something other than web development/design.
This will be my last post until after October 21, 2007. I'm sure that I will have a ton of stuff when I come back rested, refreshed, and recharged!
Until then...
